If you are looking for a freelance website designer in the UK who builds sites that load quickly, convert, and are easy to work on yourself, you’re in the right place. I’m Eddie, and I’m behind the Key2 brand (The Key 2 your website design needs!). I design and build professional, affordable websites for small businesses across the UK. Every site I build comes with best SEO practices integrated from the outset, because a website nobody can find is not much use to anyone!

I have built websites for businesses across a wide range of sectors. From landscaping firms and independent cafés to coaching professionals and university academics. Each time, my goal is the same. I deliver a site that loads fast, looks the part, ranks well on Google, and converts visitors into enquiries.

What I Believe Makes a Great Small Business Website

I’ve built and worked on quite a few websites as a freelance website developer. I’ve come to believe that most small business websites fail for one of three reasons. They either look good but don’t rank on Google, rank reasonably well but fail to convert visitors, or were built on an inflexible platform that loads slowly, and can not be updated without a developer.

A website that’s going to work for you must do all of the following: load quickly on both mobile/desktop, present your business clearly and persuasively, target the right keywords, and make it straightforward for visitors to get in touch. Those are the standards I hold all of my projecs to. It’s why clients like Susie P describe my work as going well above and beyond what had been agreed, with clear explanations and regular check-ins throughout.

Why Page Speed Matters More Than Most People Realise

Google uses page speed as a direct ranking factor, and has done so since 2018 (and desktop since 2010). A slow website doesn’t just frustrate visitors. It actively costs you positions in search results. Every website I build is optimised for speed, including compressed images, clean code, and a reliable hosting configuration.

What Is a Responsive Website — and Why Is It Non-Negotiable?

A responsive website automatically adjusts its layout to suit any screen size. According to Statista, more than half of all global web traffic comes from mobile devices. Furthermore, Google’s mobile-first indexing means it primarily uses the mobile version of your site to determine search rankings. All websites I build are fully responsive on mobile as standard.

Should SEO Be Part of My Website Build?

Yes, always. Retrofitting SEO to a website that was not built with it in mind is hugely inefficient. When I build a website, I carry out keyword research before writing a single word of copy. From here, I structure the URLs and heading hierarchy around search intent with a clean wireframe. I also integrate Google Search Console (GSC). You can read more about how I approach this on my website design and SEO service page.

What My Freelance Website Design Service Includes

Here is exactly what I include in every website project:

Discovery and Strategy: I take the time to understand your business, your customers, competitors, and your goals before any design work begins. This ensures you’re not making any silly mistakes, and remain competitive in your niche.

Keyword Research and SEO Planning: I identify the search terms your ideal customers are using and build your site’s structure around them.

Custom Website Design: I design a site that reflects your brand, builds trust, and guides visitors towards taking action.

Mobile and Speed Optimisation: Every site I build is fast and fully responsive on all devices.

On-Page SEO: Titles, meta descriptions, heading structures, alt text, and internal linking are all handled as standard.

Google Analytics and Search Console Setup: So you can see your traffic and track rankings from day one.

Ahrefs Integration: I integrate sites with Ahrefs to give you the tools and data to grow your brand’s traffic, visibility, and revenue.

Handover and Training: I will walk you through your new site so you feel confident managing it yourself going forward.

Ongoing Maintenance: If you need someone to keep your site updated and performing well over time, I offer ongoing support at affordable rates.

I build primarily on WordPress — the world’s most widely used content management system, which is open source, fully owned by you, and easy to manage once I hand it over.

All of this is available at affordable rates. Get in touch via my contact page or through the form below for a free discovery call.

The Industries I Have Worked With

Having worked as a freelance website designer across a range of sectors, I have developed a strong understanding of what different types of businesses need from their online presence:

Trades and landscaping: clean, professional sites focused on generating local enquiries and ranking well in area-specific searches. Clear calls to action (CTAs), testimonials, and a well-optimised Google Business Profile integration I’ve found has the most positive impact.

Cafés and hospitality: visually engaging sites that communicate atmosphere, showcase menus, and capture walk-in and delivery customers through local SEO.

Education and tutoring: sites that quickly build trust with parents and students, communicate credentials clearly, and rank for subject-specific and location-specific searches. See my tutoring services or get in touch to learn more about my approach for this sector.

Coaching and consulting: professional sites that position the individual as an authority in their field, with clear service descriptions, testimonials, and a friction-less enquiry process.

Creative professionals: portfolio sites that showcase work beautifully, load quickly, and attract new clients through targeted SEO.

Whatever your sector, I design websites that work for your business. I also offer complementary social media management and broader digital services for clients who want a seamless online presence.

What My Clients Say

Simone S praised the work I did on her website, noting that I not only optimised her site and improved her SEO, but also helped her understand how to use social media to support the site’s performance. She highlighted my regular contact throughout the process and said she did not think she could have done it without my help.

Susie P described how I went well beyond the original brief when working on her website: explaining every step I was taking, checking in regularly, and making sure she always understood what I was working on and why.

Sandy C noted that despite his being something of an IT neanderthal (his words, not mine!) I was patient and adaptable, especially when the IT wouldn’t perform as expected. He said he wouldn’t hesitate to recommend me.

Frequently Asked Questions — Freelance Website Designer UK

How much does a freelance website designer charge in the UK?

Freelance website designers are typically far more affordable than agencies, because there are no large overheads, account management layers, or internal handoffs between teams. I keep my pricing transparent and tailored to the scope of each project. Get in touch and I’d be more than happy to provide a straightforward quote.

How long does it take to build a small business website?

For most small business websites, I work to a timeline of two to six weeks from our first conversation to launch. The exact timeline depends on the number of pages, the complexity of the design, and how quickly content and feedback are provided. I always agree a clear timeline and scope before starting.

Should I get a new website or improve my existing one?

This depends on the state of your current site. Factors such as the platform you’re working on, the age of the site, number of pages, and the tools used can all affect what is the best option here. In some cases, a redesign or SEO audit is the most cost-effective route. In others, starting fresh saves time (and money!). I will always give you my honest opinion when looking at your site. Be rest assured, I won’t pressure you to make the more expensive decision.

What if I want to make updates to my website myself?

I build on WordPress precisely because it is straightforward to update once you know the basics. I can provide a handover session so you feel confident making your own updates going forward. Small businesses owning their own websites and feeling in control of their digital presence are one of my main goals at Key2.

Does your website design service include copywriting?

I can write website copy as part of the project, based on keyword research and the information you share about your business. Alternatively, if you prefer to write your own copy, I will give you a clear brief and guidance to work from.

Do I own my website once it is built?

Yes, 100%! I build on platforms you own and control. You are never locked into a recurring subscription or a system that belongs to me. As above, SMBs owning their own websites and digital presence are one of my main goals at Key2!

Ready to Build a Website That Actually Works? Contact Key2 Today

If you’re searching for a reliable and affordable freelance SEO consultant in the UK, welcome to Key2! At Key2, Eddie Wesson provides tailored search engine optimisation services designed to help small businesses rank higher on Google – without the agency price tag or the jargon.

Whether you run a local café, a landscaping business, a coaching practice, or a creative studio, SEO can make the difference between being found online and being invisible. Investing in the right SEO support early saves considerable time and money down the line.

Why Small Businesses in the UK Need a Freelance SEO Consultant

Search engine optimisation is one of the most cost-effective forms of digital marketing available. Unlike paid advertising, effective SEO continues to deliver results long after the initial work is complete. Moreover, research consistently shows that the vast majority of users click on organic results rather than paid ads.

However, SEO can feel overwhelming when you are also running a business. Consequently, many small business owners either ignore it entirely or pay for expensive agency contracts. That is precisely where a freelance SEO consultant in the UK makes a real difference. You get direct, personalised attention from an expert who genuinely understands your goals.

What Does On-Page SEO Mean?

On-page SEO refers to all the optimisations made directly on your website. This includes title tags, meta descriptions, heading structures, image alt attributes, and keyword placement throughout your content. It is the foundation of any strong SEO strategy and directly influences how Google interprets and ranks your pages.

What Is Technical SEO?

Technical SEO covers the behind-the-scenes elements that help search engines crawl and index your site. This includes page load speed, mobile responsiveness, site architecture, and URL structure. At Key2, technical SEO is included as standard in every project – because a fast, well-structured site is a non-negotiable – both for better rankings, and user conversion.

What Key2’s Freelance SEO Service Includes

“Eddie has got great knowledge in SEO and social media. He is incredibly patient in explaining everything to me. I can honestly say that he is a gem.” — Bettina Garai, Key2 client

Susie P described how Eddie listened carefully, asked intelligent questions, and then went to work — explaining every step and going well beyond what had originally been agreed. She noted that he kept in regular contact throughout and would outline what he planned to tackle next.

Simone S highlighted how Eddie not only optimised her site and improved her SEO, but also helped her understand how to use social media to support her website’s performance. She added that she does not think she could do without his help.

These reviews reflect Key2’s commitment to transparency, communication, and real results — not vague promises.

Frequently Asked Questions — Freelance SEO Consultant UK

What does a freelance SEO consultant do?
A freelance SEO consultant analyses your website, identifies why it is not ranking well, and implements improvements to help it appear higher in Google search results. This typically involves keyword research, on-page changes, technical fixes, and content recommendations – all tailored to your business and budget.

How much does a freelance SEO consultant charge in the UK?
Freelance SEO consultants in the UK generally charge significantly less than agencies, as there are no overheads, account management fees, or VAT. Key2 keeps pricing affordable and tailored to small business budgets. Contact us to discuss your specific needs.

How long does SEO take to produce results?
SEO is a medium-to-long-term strategy. Most businesses begin to see meaningful ranking improvements within three to six months of consistent, well-targeted work. Technical and on-page fixes can still produce quicker wins, however, especially for newer websites.

Do I need SEO if I already have a website?
Yes. Simply having a website does not guarantee visibility in search engines. Without proper SEO, your site may not appear for the searches your customers are making. An SEO audit is an excellent first step to understanding exactly where you stand.

Can a freelance SEO consultant help my local business?
Absolutely. Local SEO is a core part of Key2’s work. Whether your business is based in London, Loughborough, or anywhere else across the UK, a targeted local SEO strategy can significantly improve your visibility in area-specific searches.

Start Ranking Higher – Contact Key2 Today

Build Confidence with Tuition – The Key2 Approach

One of the most effective ways to build confidence with tuition is to help students realise how much they already know. Many students arrive at their first session convinced they’re simply “bad” at a subject – yet, within a few weeks, they discover that the foundations were there all along. They just needed someone to help them see it.

Why Students Lose Confidence in the Classroom

Classroom environments, while valuable, aren’t always well-suited to building individual confidence. When a student doesn’t follow something, they often feel unable to ask. No one wants to slow the class down, or feel singled out. Being the only one to raise your hand can definitely feel daunting! Over time, therefore, small misunderstandings compound, and students lose confidence in not only the subject, but themselves.

This is particularly common at Key Stage 2, where the jump in difficulty across Maths, English, and Science can feel sudden and daunting. Consequently, many capable students begin to believe the problem lies with them, rather than with the pace of teaching.

How You Can Build Confidence with Key2 Tuition

One-to-one tuition removes the social pressure of the classroom entirely. There’s no one to compare yourself to, no fear of asking a “silly” question, and no moving on until you’re ready. Moreover, The charity Education Endowment Foundation, estimates that a year of one-to-one tuition is equivalent to five additional months of schooling – in large part because of how efficiently focused, supportive learning works.

At Key2 Tuition, I use interactive exercises, active recall tasks, and practical examples to make sessions engaging rather than intimidating. As a result, students often surprise themselves with what they’re capable of.

Small Wins Build Up – and so does confidence!

Confidence can’t be built in just one tutoring session, but it can be built steadily. Every concept understood, every question answered correctly, and every exam technique practised contributes to a student’s belief in their own ability. By the time assessments arrive, therefore, the goal isn’t just scoring well – it’s going in feeling ready to ace it.

If your child is struggling with confidence in any subject, get in touch. Sometimes, a small bit of support makes all the difference.

What Makes a Great Tutoring Experience? Here’s What One Student Had to Say

Finding the right personalised tutor can feel like a big decision. You want someone who genuinely understands how you (or your child!) learns, rather than someone who simply reads off the slides, or talks you through a textbook. A recent review from one of my tutees captures exactly what I aim to deliver in every session:

“He is a highly knowledgeable and patient tutor who explains concepts clearly and in a way that’s easy to understand. What stood out most was his ability to tailor each session to my needs, making sure I fully grasped each topic before moving on.”

Huno

/

Higher GCSE Student

This is the very core of what a personalised tutor is all about. Frankly, no two learners are the same – so why should any two tutoring sessions? Whether a student needs to slow down on a tricky concept or is ready to push ahead, lessons at Key2 Tuition meet them – where they are.

Why a Personalised Tutor Puts Confidence First

One thing often goes unmentioned in tuition is how much mindset matters. The same student noted:

“Eddie created a comfortable learning environment where I felt confident asking questions.”

Many students – especially those who have struggled in the clasroom setting! – are hesitant to admit they don’t understand something. I remember one parent told me just today that occassionaly her son says he understands something but when is asked to explain it, he can struggle. As a result, small omissions and misunderstandings can compound overtime. One to one sessions create a space where questions are not just welcomed, but actively encouraged. One of my favourite parts of tutoring is getting to answer the intelligent questions asked by my tutee’s, which often goes past the specification. When students feel secure that they can ask questions, they learn faster and retain more.

A Structured Personalised Tutor Approach that Delivers Real Results

“His structured approach and practical examples really helped me improve my skills and build confidence quickly.”

Furthermore, every session at Key2 Tuition is purposeful. I don’t believe in busywork – instead, every lesson is planned around clear goals, using practical examples that connect the theory to the real-world application. As a result, progress is clear to the tutee, and students leave each session knowing what they’ve achieved.

Ready to Get Started with a Personalised Tutor?

If you’re looking for a tutor who will take the time to understand your needs, explain concepts clearly, and support you every step of the way, get in touch today.

‘Were you in the newspaper?’

Not what I expected to be asked as I was grabbing my lunch in my uni dining hall, ahead of my next lecture – a ‘How’s your day going?’ or a ‘What would you like?’ was more what I had in mind, but this moment reminded me why skill building and taking opportunities are so important. This experience was definitely surprising – after Jane Denton featured me in The i Paper How I Manage my Money series, I expected slightly higher visitor numbers to my blog, perhaps a congratulations from some of my network, but not much else.

This interaction reminded me again of just how connected we all are – something important to remember in our everchanging digital world. Thanks must go to MyPocketSkill (referral link to sign-up here) for putting me in touch with Jane and providing me with this opportunity, as well as for their incredible platform for young people. Through MyPocketSkill I’ve been able to connect with some fantastic clients and work with them on their businesses, doing tasks ranging from social media management to tutoring and database design.

Much of the work so many of us do can at times not feel very tangible, whether that work is writing, administrative, networking, or any other type of work. I believe this moment really shows how important our work is and why we should always say yes to opportunities and dive in.

It may be a cliché, but it’s definitely a small world!

It’s lessons such as these I work to share through my blog on my website https://key2.com/blog/ where I write about skill building, taking opportunities, and the experiences I’ve gained working with different clients. If you’re another student or young professional, I’d encourage you to take a look!

University is expensive. Graduates were mis-sold student finance. The economy is still struggling.

41% of students have considered dropping out of university due to money-related issues. 9 in 10 students’ mental health is impacted by the cost-of-living.

So, in this struggling market – where you’re just starting out, mind you – how are you meant to survive, or hopefully thrive? Well – the honest truth is it isn’t easy. Students spend on average £1,142 per month, and with the average maintenance loan falling short of living costs by £502 month – that’s a big gap for you to close.

However, my hope is that by sharing my personal experience down below, you’ll be able to get a better idea of either what it’s like to be a student, or, if you are a student, how you could better manage your finances.

How I handle my finances

SFE + Parental Contribution

I currently receive a maintenance loan of £4,915 – that’s the minimum for living away from home, outside of London. I also receive money from my parents – £500/month.

They came up with this figure using the MSE University Parental Contribution Calculator – parents are expected by the government to contribute to these costs – yet this isn’t made explicit. Here’s one quote Martin Lewis included in his post, from a young student talking about his parents’ view on the situation:

“They can, but their view is I’m 18 now and at uni, and believe I should stand on my own two feet.”

In total, that works out to £6,000 from my parents, and £4,915 from SFE – £10,915 in all.

Part-time work

Freelancing

To supplement my income, I also work freelance. I list my services on my site key2.com. I offer services such as Tutoring, Website Design & SEO, Social Media Management, and more. If you’re another student interested in working as a freelancer, please do get in touch with me – I’d love to help you get into this line of work – it’s very rewarding!

Through this, I made £637.50 from July 2025 to February 2026. However, when you’re just getting started out as a freelancer, it’s very difficult to form a network through which to get work. I managed to build this network with help from professional career advisers at my school/uni, friends and family, and through networking with local businesses.

Earnings on MyPocketSkill

I would highly recommend MyPocketSkill (referral link here). NB: if you use my referral link, you’ll get £5 upon signing up. I was actually featured on the Lloyds bank x MyPocketSkill student account page – you can read what I had to say about MyPocketSkill below:

I’m a Geography student at a Top 10 UK Uni. I love the range of tasks available on MyPocketSkill; through tutoring, social media management, photography, and admin tasks, I’ve made over £4600

Should I use MyPocketSkill?

Through MyPocketSkill, a variety of tasks are available – pretty much anything worth doing as a freelancer is available.

However, the main advantage of MyPocketSkill is the client base. As I mentioned above, getting clients is incredibly difficult – and is very hard if you don’t already have an extensive network. However, through MyPocketSkill a number of tasks are listed everyday – for example, looking at the platform now (09/02/2026 at 17:15) 22 listings were posted in the last 23 hours – that’s almost one an hour!

When is it easiest to get bookings on MyPocketSkill?

The platform also gets busier – in the run-up to exams, parents start looking for more support with tuition. Clients also start looking for photographers for weddings and other events in the warmer months.

What can I do on MyPocketSkill?

As mentioned above, plenty of tasks are available on MyPocketSkill. However, if you’re new to freelancing, you may be unsure of what to do. I remember one of my friends during A-Levels who was interested in freelancing was saying to me he had no idea what he’d even do, although he did like the idea.

If you’re sitting in this boat, one of the easiest tasks to get into is tutoring. You’ll have an intimate knowledge with the course, considering you’re either currently doing it, or very recently have. That means you understand which topics are difficult, and how ideas can be explained in a way that makes sense – something older tutors might not be as able to offer. You understand study pressures, and can better emphasise with your tutees.

If you’re interested in doing other tasks types, and would like to have a chat about what you think you might be good at, feel free to get in contact with me here. I’m always happy to have a chat with other students and help them get started!

How much can I earn?

MyPocketSkill have an amazing approach to earnings, which I was really impressed with when I started working with them – and still am! They operate using a levelling up system.

When you start on their platform, they’ll automatically level you up based on your experience and age – e.g. if you have a DBS, you can start doing Babysitting at level 2. If you’re a Uni student, you start tutoring at Level 4. Also, their rates are always above minimum wage for the task type – that means you’ll be earning more, working from home, than you would be as a barista in a café!

They provide a levelling up calculator, where you can input your age so you can see what your earnings will be on the platform.

As you complete tasks, receive positive reviews, and get rebooked, you’ll either be automatically levelled up by the system for tasks like tutoring, or manually for tasks such as social media management.

Is MyPocketSkill better than other platforms?

Personally, I feel that for students, MyPocketSkill is by far the best choice.

When it comes to fees, they’re incredibly low – just 3%! Fiverr charge 5.5% in comparison!

Additionally, the platform is made for students, by a local, friendly, UK team. When you’re talking to clients, the Community Team is on hand to make sure everything goes smoothly – if you’d like to put a face to a name, you can learn all about MyPocketSkill here.

Onboarding

When you start working with MyPocketSkill, they’ll also invite you to an onboarding call – here they show you how the platform works, and you’ll get to meet a member of the team, who can also answer any questions you may have.

I can remember one time where I really found this useful – during my A-Levels, I applied to quite a few listings when I was looking for more work, and then a couple weeks later, some of those clients replied after I’d already found new clients. As a freelancer, the ability to say no to clients is very important – it avoids you over-committing to clients, and then not being able to give the focus and attention each task deserves. The Community Team noticed this, and gave me a hand and some advice on how to manage this workload. However – you don’t want to rely on this! Do yourself a favour and learn from my mistakes, not your own! 😉

Protection

MyPocketSkill also provide protections for you through their terms and conditions – when you work through them, you don’t need your own privacy policy, terms and conditions, and all of the other legal requirements. When on a subscription based booking with a client, the client needs to provide notice of cancellation (which I discuss more below). They’re also there to step in in the very rare case where you have an issue with a client. They’re currently working on integrating video calls through their platform, which will be an amazing additional safeguard for their under 18 users, as well as enabling recordings for sessions and automatic notes via AI – something I’m very impressed with.

Community Engagement

MyPocketSkill are also super engaged and passionate with their mission to create a financially empowered Gen Z – they’re always running events (e.g. their annual Community Day, their recent SkillUp event), looking for (paid!) brand ambassadors (this is a really good way to build up experience and a portfolio for social media tasks – as well as getting to network), and partnering with brands such as Lloyds, as I mentioned above.

Photo of MyPocketSkill Community Day, courtesy of MyPocketSkill

Barista

As well as having worked as a freelancer online, I’ve also worked as a barista. While this job did provide benefits – e.g. free coffee, paid break (with food!), and getting to socialise, it did have its downsides. For example, you’re completely dependent on your employer, and them having shifts you can do.

I experienced this the hard way, when one day my employer just removed me from the group chat – without any notice. When you work on these zero-hour contracts, this is the risk you accept – you get no job security.

Freelancing helps mitigate this by having multiple clients – let’s say you have 3 clients, providing 8 hours a month to each, at level 4 – meaning you earn £121.25 per client, totalling £363.75/month. If one of your clients does decide they no longer need your services, that’s not the end of the world. On MyPocketSkill, clients must provide notice before cancelling a booking – meaning you now have a month to find a new client.

Bike Courier

I work with Uber Eats and Just Eat, and am currently applying to work with Deliveroo – although their application process seems to be a bit broken, which I’m trying to resolve with them (with limited success!). In the past, I’ve only worked with Uber Eats, and even when using their ‘opportunities’ (extra earnings at peak times), occasionally I struggle to earn even minimum wage. When I do receive a tip, that does push me slightly closer to minimum wage.

I only really do this because I enjoy cycling, and it means I’m getting paid to cycle. It’s definitely not worth doing for the money, unless you really have no other option.

You also need to purchase your own food delivery bag (although you can get them discounted through your courier company) – which will eat into your initial earnings.

Earnings by Type (part-time)

So, in total, how much have I earnt from each of these? The figures below will be from the last year – so from February 2025 – February 2026.

MyPocketSkill Earnings

£2839.45 – £236.62/month

Freelancing

£637.50 – £53.13/month

Food Courier

In total I have made £212.26 – I tried to find out how much time I’d spent delivering, but Uber don’t appear to make this figure available unless you’re in the weekly view (perhaps tellingly). This figure also wouldn’t have included the time I spend cycling looking for a trip – which brings down my hourly pay.
I have only spent about 3 weeks delivering food – and when I did I would usually spend at least a few hours cycling until my phone died (the Uber app is hard on the battery, and I don’t have an e-bike). Therefore, for the weeks I was consistently cycling, I made £70.98 a week, or £283.95 a month if we assumed I had done an extra week, in which I made the average I did in the previous three weeks. However, for calculating my total annual income and expenses, we’ll only use the figures we have – so £17.75/month.

It’s still a solid choice, though – you can just pick up one trip on your way back home, and you’re not forced to take trips you don’t want to.
Expenses

Unfortunately, I also have expenses. Below I’ll list each one, and its cost (per week).

Accommodation. Accommodation is my largest cost – although this figure will look slightly higher, since I’m in a 5 day a week catered hall. Sidenote: I’d really recommend getting a catered hall – these meals are amazing for socialising with your hallmates, and the time you save from not having to cook is incredibly useful – when you’re just getting settled into uni, this is really useful. You also don’t have to worry about the cost of food, and can (at least in my uni) get seconds at no extra cost. Not having the temptation to skip meals to save money may also give you (or your parents!) some peace of mind.
I digress – so what are my accommodations costs per year and per week? I pay £9,906.33 a year – for a 41 week let, that’s £241.62 per week.
My maintenance loan falls short of that figure by £4991.33 – and that’s before factoring in my other living costs. The student loan system also has some other issues I won’t get into in this post, but so that you’re aware there’s a rethink repayment campaign – you can send a letter to your MP using their online tool – you just input your name and details, and it inserts your details into an email template – then 2 clicks, and it’s sent!

Food. On the weekends, I generally eat with friends – by cooking together, we all save time, and money! By shopping at LIDL, and only having a meal a day, I only spend £3-5 each weekend. That works out to somewhere around £18 a month.

Laundry. I do a weekly wash, which works out to £2.80 a week. I don’t use a tumble dryer, and instead use the drying room in my accommodation – meaning I save some money here. For bedsheets, I wash them either every one or two weeks. The wash costs £2.80, but since I need to sleep in the bedsheets, I pay for the tumble dryer – costing me £1.40. Assuming the cheaper option, that’s £8.40 a month, plus the £2.80 a week – giving us a total of £19.60 a month.

Subscriptions. I don’t have Spotify, which I’d assume is one of the main offenders for most students. Instead, I use Musicolet – this is a music player for your audio files. It works offline, and can play lossless (better quality) audio, just like Apple Music. Spotify has recently started rolling out lossless audio, so it will be interesting to see how it stacks up against competitors.
I do have Audible however – as a busy uni student, I unfortunately don’t have much time to read – as evidenced by the 5 books sitting on my bookshelf, which still have yet to be opened (even though three of them are signed!). Audible Premium Plus (naming really has gotten worse…) works out to £8.99/month. I probably could go for the annual plan, but haven’t bothered yet.
I really like using Audible, since it means I can still engage with books, despite how busy I am – I’m currently working through the Skullduggery Pleasant series, but have also really enjoyed books such as The Martian and Artemis by Andy Weir, or the Bobiverse series by Derek E. It also means I’m supporting UK cycling being safer and more accessible – definitely a benefit to all!
I also have my monthly phone bill – £10/month, for 20GB and unlimited minutes and texts.

Other ongoing costs. I have other annual memberships – e.g. I’m part of various societies at Uni, I’m part of a cycling club through which I play bike polo and attend repair workshops (saving me money on bike maintenance!), and I’m considering taking up a new sport – although I’m not certain yet at the time of writing. This figure does also include other events such as going to the club in the students union (tickets and memberships are grouped together).
I also go to the gym – this cost me £231, since I was able to get the Black Friday deal.
So far, I’ve spent £546.40 on these memberships and tickets (which are valid for the year).
I also occasionally go out for drinks and/or a meal, which costs £10-30 each time.
I’d estimate my monthly cost at the end of the year would be somewhere around £80-130 a month for these costs.

Academic Costs. Luckily, my university has an incredibly well stocked library – so I don’t need to buy books. Printing is quite cheap – I filled my account with £2 of credit at the start of the year, and haven’t needed to refill it yet! I also already had stationery from A-Levels, so nothing needed there. Software is also included with my course, and the first year field trips are included in the course fees. I am considering purchasing a laptop soon, however – which I will expect to work out to £2-3k (potentially more if memory prices continue to be terrible!). This will allow me to start offering video editing as a service, however. I would offer this currently, but due to my laptop being a 6 year old convertible, it isn’t really feasible. Since this isn’t an ongoing cost however, I’ll ignore it for this calculation.

Travel. Train travel to visit home, or buses to nearby cities can add up. I do try to avoid this by cycling (although I wouldn’t recommend it – cycling 4 hours in the dark with a sub-standard light is not a fun way to spend a weekend!) – I’d estimate around £10/month.

Clothing. I don’t often buy new clothing, however I do need to get sports equipment and clothing. I also need one-off clothing – e.g. fancy dress for a party. This is around another £10/month.

In summary, my expenses add up to around £1256/month.

Savings and Investments

For my savings and investments, I use various products, which keep my costs low, and returns as high as possible.

Which products do I use?

Savings Products:

For my savings, I use two main accounts; one high yielding 7.1% regular saver, and an instant access savings account at 5%.

Zopa Biscuit Bank Account:
The Zopa Biscuit account offers various benefits, making it a very attractive offer. The main benefit, however, is the 7.1% regular saver, which you can contribute £300 to a month, and withdraw at any time.
Additionally, you’ll receive 2% AER on your bank account balance, and 2% cashback on direct debits (up to a cap).
Zopa also offer investing from £1 – however, they charge fees, which is why I prefer to use Trading 212 – which I’ll discuss below.
If you’re interested in signing up to Zopa to benefit from this great savings rate, please use my referral link here to get £10!

Nationwide offer a FlexOne Saver, which pays 5% AER – unfortunately, this account is only available with their children’s current account, so if you are over 17, you can’t apply for one. However, if you already have one, you can keep it until you’re 23. You can read more about it here.

Investment Products:

I hold both a LISA and a Stocks and Shares ISA. An ISA (Individual Savings Account) is a tax efficient account, for those over 18 to be able to save or invest up to £20k a year. Note that this is a use or it or lose it limit – if you only use £15k in one year, this can’t be carried to the next year.

Trading 212 Stocks and Shares ISA
Through my Trading 212 account, I have access to both an ISA, as well as an Invest account – which provides me a card with 1.5% cashback. I use this card when paying for large expenses such as my student accommodation – 1.5% of £10,000 is £150! Do note however, there is a monthly £15 cashback limit – so you may need to pay your accommodation payment early to maximise cashback. By signing up using my link, you can get free fractional shares worth up to £100.
However, there is a higher risk associated with investments – their value can rise and fall, and you can get back less than you originally invested.
So far, in my ISA I’ve made a return of 10.6% – and I only started investing 7 months ago! However, past performance does not guarantee future results. Always do your own research, and seek financial advice if you require it – you’re responsible for your own financial decisions.

Plum LISA
The Lifetime ISA is a scheme in which the government provides a 25% bonus to your investment (up to £1k a year). This means if you deposit £4,000, the government will add £1,000 to your account, for a total of £5,000. Additionally, you’ll earn interest on this – so with my Plum ISA, I receive 3.11% AER, plus a 12 month bonus 0.89% AER rate, to a total of 4% AER. This means each year I get a total of 25% AER + 4% AER – resulting in a combined total return of 29% a year! However, the LISA isn’t perfect for everyone – you can only use the invested funds for a first home, retirement, or some other very specific circumstances. Upon withdrawing you pay a 25% penalty – which is on the amount you withdraw, not deposited. This means if you deposit £10, the government will then add £2.50. This means you have £12.50 deposited. If you then withdraw this £12.50, you’ll pay 25% – on the £12.50. 25% of £12.50 is £3.125 – so £12.50 – £3.125 = £9.375. This means you’d lose about 6.25% of your original investment.
The LISA also has some other caveats – when used to purchase a house, the value of the house has to be below £450k – making it hard to buy a house in London. This price cap hasn’t been raised since 2017.
Most providers also only allow you to invest in cash in a LISA – there’s no stocks and shares option, reducing your returns – and especially considering how long-term of an investment a LISA is, being able to accept higher short-term volatility may pay off.
For the above reasons, I’ve only placed just over £10 in mine – although I will keep it open, in-case I ever would like to utilise the government bonus in the future.

My Final Annual Budget

In total, I earnt £3,689.91 from all of my part-time work from Feb 2025 – Feb 2026. Through SFE and my parents, I’ll receive £10,915. In total, that’s an annual incoming of £14,604.91.

My average annual expenses add up to £15,072/year.

Looking at the above, you may assume I’m barely breaking even, or even in debt. You’d be correct if you did – but that’s because I’m ‘stoozing‘. (Students – I’d strongly recommend reading the linked article – it contains information about the rewards available with student bank accounts, and some tips about using/managing your student overdraft).

I only went to university in September 2025 – and before then, I was working part-time through MyPocketSkill, as a courier, freelancer, and as a barista. That allowed me to build up some savings, and invest my money using trading platforms like Trading 212 – all while my parents were supporting most of my day-to-day costs. This was so useful when I came to university, since it meant I had a strong financial buffer, meaning I had less financial worries.

That’s why I believe it is so important for students to start earning, young. Not only does it provide young people a financial buffer, but it’s also the best way for young people to learn about and understand money. Only by earning and having their own money, will they have the shift from £20 being something they have to ask your parents for, to an hour or so of their time. It’s such a strong tool for controlling impulsive spending. Trust me, I know – I’ve seen it work with my friends, sibling, and even in myself.

When it comes to choosing your student bank account, there is a huge variety of choice – there are offering from Lloyds, Nationwide, Natwest, Santander – the list goes on and on! It seems almost impossible to make the right choice between them all.

In this post, I’ll give you some general information, built upon with my personal experience as a student, to hopefully help you get a better idea of your options. Remember, this information is solely for general information purposes only, and not financial advice.

Student bank account benefits

Banks are eager to get your custom, and to do this, they’ll compete with each other to offer you the best sign-up bonuses they can. For example, when I applied in 2025/26, Nationwide were offering £10/month in Just Eat vouchers, as well as a tidy £100!

However, I’d suggest looking past these instant rewards, at other factors – such as how much overdraft an account will offer you. Overdraft cab be an incredbily useful tool for the financially savvy student, if used well. I’ll go further into detail about this later on.

Types of rewards

The types of rewards offered by a student bank account will vary, and currently at the time of writing, only two providers are still offering incentives – NatWest and Santander (MSE). Banks will likely start coming up with new offerings come the next freshers period – so it’ll be worth checking what each one offers then.

As an example, in 2025/26 offerings such as cash incentives, railcards, tastecards, and food delivery vouchers were all available, as well as overdrafts.

Railcard

Railcards are useful for travel, especially if you’re going to be a student far from home, and expect you’ll need to travel back fairly often – getting you a third off of your rail tickets.

Tastecard

I have a tastecard, although I can’t say I’ve ever really used it – I don’t dine out as much as I thought I would. It was free, so I can’t really complain, and the option of getting 2 for 1 meals or 25% off the bill at 1000s of restaurants is always there, if I ever do want it.

Food Delivery Vouchers

Food delivery vouchers, in my opinion, are a great incentive (although not as good as a cash incentive!). Nationwide offers £10 of Just Eat vouchers a month, although these must be claimed every month, or they’ll expire. They also offered an extra £20 for you and a friend if you referred someone – although, annoyingly, they stopped running this scheme before I could jump onto it.
I also believe Lloyds offered food delivery vouchers as well – but there was a minimum number of debit card transaction a month to be eligible, and since I prefer to spend on dedicated rewards cards, I never went for theirs.

I’m a huge fan of these – especially if you’re not in a catered hall, being able to get cheap(ish) food quickly is really useful, especially on the weekends. Just Eat occassionally send me emails offering me £10 off of a £15 spend, or 80% off of a £15+ spend, which can be used in conjuction with the vouchers – meaning I can get a meal for nothing! If you do go for these however, ensure you’re not eating beyond your means – while not as expensive as dining out, food delivery can easily get above £20, and considering cooking your own food with friends is usually around £1-4 in my experience (and more sociable!), eating in can be a much better option.

Cash Incentives

Some banks will offer you cash to sign up – for example, I remember Santander did a huge student prize draw, with a max prize of £100,000. Everyone who signed up, however, got at least £20.

Nationwide and Lloyds offered £100 for signing up, and NatWest offered £85.

What do I need to know about a student bank account?

Getting a student bank account has a few requirements, although you should be able to meet all of these quite easily if you’re a student.

You’ll need a UCAS code or confirmation letter with an unconditional offer, or a letter from a university confirming your place. UCAS have a guide on how to get your status code.

You’ll also be applying for credit with most of these student accounts (assuming you choose to apply for an overdraft while applying). This means you’ll need to pass a hard credit check.

You’ll also need ID and proof of address. This could be your driving license, passport, or any other valid identity document.

You can also only get an overdraft when you’re 18 – this shouldn’t be an issue for most students, but for those of you heading to Uni before you’re 18, you’ll have to wait until then to get an overdraft. I know from personal experience, a good few in my hall at Uni were under 18 on move in day.

Can I get multiple student bank accounts?

Generally, banks include in their terms that you may only hold one student bank account. From my personal experience, Nationwide was the only bank that explicity asked me if I had another student bank account on their form to apply for an account.

Remember, these safeguards exist to reduce the risk of students taking on more debt than they can realistically repay. For that reason, I wouldn’t recommend opening multiple student accounts -especially if your motivation is to access multiple overdrafts.

However, holding bank accounts with many banks can be very useful. For example, you can get access to bonuses – such as the Nationwide fairer share payment of £100, dependent on their financial performance.

Holding multiple accounts can also ensure you can access better rates – different banks will offer different financial products such as savings accounts, with differing terms. By having accounts with different banks, you’re more likely to find the account which would be best for you. As an example of a really good account available at the time of writing, Zopa are currently offering their Biscuit bank account, which comes with a regular 7.1% AER saver.
Referral link for Zopa Biscuit bank account here – by signing up using this link, you will receive a free £10!

Thinking beyond first year

Many student bank accounts increase their overdraft limits gradually over your degree, and then convert into graduate accounts (which allows you to pay off your 0% overdraft). It’s worth checking:

How the overdraft changes year by year

How long the graduate overdraft will last

Whether interest is charged after you graduate

A slightly worse sign-up bonus may be worth it if the long-term terms are more generous.

Why do I want a student overdraft?

I’ve seen greatly differing opinions on overdrafts at University. There are those who are more aggressive with their savings (such as me) and those who shy away from their overdraft like it’s going to burn them.

Personally, I like to do something called ‘stoozing’. You can read more about it on the MSE website, but the basic idea is if you’re being offered, let’s say a £1000 overdraft at 0%, you can then put that in a savings account at 5%, and get £50 after a year. That’s money for nothing! (and your chicks for free).

Of course, that isn’t without risk – if you go over your overdraft, you can easily ruin your credit score and incur heavy fees – which can wipe out that £50 far too easily. To avoid this, I don’t put any payments through my accounts with an overdraft, and have dedicated cards for my spending, which offer me rewards such as cashback and points. I won’t go into this now, but I may well write another post about these – let me know if you’d be interested in that in the comments below.

Even if you don’t want to use your overdraft to make some extra money, it can still provide value – let’s say your student accomodation payment is due before you get your next maintenance loan instalment, or your next paycheck. Used carefully, an overdraft can:

Help cover essentials such as food if a loan payment or wages are delayed

Reduce the need for short-term borrowing at high interest

Provide flexibility

It is important, however, you don’t look at this overdraft like it’s extra income. That money isn’t yours – and the bank can ask for it back at anytime. Don’t go spending it unless you have a concrete plan for how you’re going to pay it back.

Risks with ‘stoozing’ – and having a backup emergency fund

That brings me onto another point – when ‘stoozing’ you also could place that money into stocks and shares. This does have the potential to offer you a slightly higher return, but at the risk of the value of the investment decreasing, and at the added cost of being more illiquid. If you do decide this is an avenue you’d want to pursue, ensure you still have enough cash reserves to be able to pay off the overdraft, and cover your living expenses for a decent while.

How long that period is will vary person to person, but imagine you suddenly have an unexpected bill – e.g. your car or bicycle breaks, and you have to pay £500 to get it fixed. Also assume that you lose your job, and you now need to rely on your savings. This is what makes instant access savings accounts beneficial – you’re placing your money away, so psychologically it’s seperated from your spending pot, and it’s also growing (hopefully at at least the rate of inflation), but it’s always there if you need it.

Final thoughts

I hope the above is useful when you come to choosing your which student bank account you want to go with, and that some of my anecdotes prove useful. With so many options, it’s easy to focus on sign-up bonuses or short-term perks, but the real value you’ll find from these accounts is often through how they support your through your degree – and potentially beyond when they mature into a graduate account.

It’s worth remember that there is no ‘best’ student bank account for everyone. The right choice is going to depend on ho you manage money, whether you expect to use an overdraft, and comfortable you are with borrowing – even at 0%. Taking time to understand the terms and your options now, could well save you stress further down the road.

If there’s one piece of advice you take from this post – be financially responsible. It’s easy to underestimate how badly you can be burned by making a simple mistake, or if your finances change due to something you can’t control (e.g. losing a job).

If you’re unsure, don’t rush the decision – weigh up your options. You can always ask a parent or someone else you trust, who have good financial habits, to help steer you in the right direction.

Disclaimer

Again – remember this isn’t financial advice. I’m not a financial adviser or any sort of finance professional. The information here is here for general information purposes, and is based on my personal experience and research. Do your own research and check the latest details before making any decisions.

Also, remember banks frequently change their offers and incentives, and those above are included for illustrative purposes only. Always check the terms directly with the provider before making a decision.

How Personalised Tuition Can Close Learning Gaps Quickly

Every student learns differently, and sometimes classroom teaching alone isn’t enough to fully understand a topic. Personalised tuition can make a signficant difference, helping students to identify gaps in their knowledge, build confidence, and achieve better results – in an informal, friendly format.

What is Personalised Tuition?

Personalised tution means tailoring lessons specifically to a student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style. Unlike one-size-fits-all classroom teaching, this approach ensures students spend more time on areas they struggle with, while still consolidation what they already know.

This means students can go back to areas they haven’t fully understand – while they may normally be left behind in a classroom. Targeted lessons and moving at a flexible pace all help cement in understanding, while ensuring students know it’s safe to ask questions about areas they don’t understand.

How Personalised Tuition Closes Learning Gaps

Identify Areas of Weakness Quickly.
Through assessments and observations, a tutor can pinpoint exactly where a student needs more help. This allows students to focus their efforts efficiently, rather than wasting time on topics they already understand.

Filling Knowledge Gaps
Tutors can revist foundational concepts to ensure understanding before moving onto more advanced topics. This ensures that gaps in knowledge don’t compound over time.

Faster Learning than in the Classroom
The Education Endowment Foundation writes that “one to one tuition is very effective at improving pupil outcomes.”

Boosting Confidence
Struggling students can often lose confidence, especially when they see their classmates speeding ahead. Personalised tuition allows students to see their progress first hand, increasing motivation and their self-belief.

Preparing for Exams and Assessments
With gaps filled and confidence restored, students can approach tests with exam technique and knowledge they gained through their one to one tutoring. This targeted approach improves results in SATs, 11+, GCSEs, or A-Levels.

Tools and Techniques Used in Personalised Tuition

To make learning engaging and effective, personalised tuition often uses:

Interactive exerceises and quizzes

Practical problem-solving tasks

Active recall tasks

Digital learning resources for extra practice

Regular feedback and progress tracking

Whether your aim is top grades, getting prepared for that exam just around the corner (they always come too soon!), or simply supplementing classroom learning, expert Key Stage 2 Tutoring can make a huge difference – the charity Education Endowment Foundation, estimates that a year of one-to-one tuition is equivalent to five additional months of schooling.

Key Stage 2 is also a critical stage in a child’s learning, laying the foundations they’ll need in secondary school and beyond. Students at this age develop essential skills in reading, writing, maths, and science. Every child learns at their own pace – and sometimes they need extra support to stay on track. That’s where personalised KS2 tuition can make a real difference.

As a current undergraduate at a Top 10 UK University, I bring a recent experience of exam and study pressures, connecting with students in a way tradition tuition sometimes can’t.

My approach is flexible, engaging, and centred on individual growth. I aim to help children gain confidence and knowledge through my engaging lesson plans, tailor made to ensure their focus. I use tools such as interactive quizzes, fill in the word, and other puzzles to keep students engaged.
