Social Media Coach for Startups & Founders

Startup founder filming social media content for their brand launch

I’m Eddie, a social media coach for founders, founders, and self-employed professionals. Here’s a scenario I find killing founders momentum online: a trend that could make or break your launch is dead in 48 hours, while your agency is still waiting on your approval for days. That lag is what kills momentum for early-stage brands on socials. And, it’s exactly why more founders are choosing coaching over full outsourcing.

Coaching isn’t management – it’s the opposite

Full-service (“done-for-you”) management means an agency takes the account and runs it: writing the copy, designing the graphics, posting on schedule. A social media coach for startup brand founders bring in does the opposite. The focus is strategic enablement – not delegating tasks off to some third-party. When you’re handing it off to another team, they don’t know your business, they don’t know how it runs, and they don’t know the team and the dynamics. With my coaching, you get audits, structured accountability calls, technical training (algorithms, short-form video, camera confidence), and ongoing feedback on your own drafts before you post. But you always keep the pen.

I come at this from tutoring as much as agency work. Alongside Key2, I tutor Geography students, and my day job there is teaching them how to reason through a mark scheme, not writing their essays for them. Coaching a founder through social media strategy uses the exact same strategy. The goal is for you to not need me within a few months, not to keep you dependent on a retainer. If you’re wondering where the catch is, and how I can possible make money doing this, the answer is clients often keep me on for other odd jobs, or refer me to friends – for example, one client Sandy, who I taught how to use Social Media then had me design and build his site a couple months down the line.

Audiences are increasingly fatigued by polished, AI-and-agency-produced content, and actively favour founder and employee voices instead. Sprout Social’s research found half of Gen Z will unfollow an account for posting content that reads as “AI slop.” Most consumers say they’re less likely to engage with over-polished brand content altogether.

Why founders are choosing this over outsourcing entirely

Cost, obviously. Full agency retainers run £800–£5,000+/month, a serious drain on pre-launch capital. Coaching gets you senior-level strategic thinking for a fraction of that, leaving more budget for product or paid ads. When Sandy needed help getting comfortable posting Instagram Reels, we had him confidently up and running in just a couple of sessions, for under £50 to get started. That’s nowhere near what a single “power hour” typically costs elsewhere. As Sandy put it:

“Eddie has answered everything I needed which was setting and posting reels on Instagram. As I am something on an IT neanderthal Eddie was patient and adaptable (especially when the IT wouldn’t perform as expected). I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him.”

Authenticity, less obviously but more importantly. The most successful founders aren’t performing on camera (or larping, as Gen Z would put it). They document real decisions in real time. Colette Laxton of The Inkey List has talked about being “front and centre” as the thing that cuts through the noise. Scripted agency content just won’t, (and doesn’t!), build the same trust.

Speed. Agencies lock you into 3–12 month contracts with slow approval layers. Coaching keeps the skill in-house, so you can test a hook and launch it the same afternoon.

Why not try it out yourself?

Post one thing this week with zero polish. Film it on your phone, don’t use a script, just you and the camera – explaining a decision you made in the business last week. Compare its engagement to your last “produced” post. If the rough one performs better, (and they usually do for early-stage brands!) – that’s not a fluke. It’s the why for coaching instead of outsourcing.

What UK coaching costs

Tactical “power hour” calls run £97-£150 a session, good for a quick technical fix or a content brainstorm. Full audits and intensives sit around £147-£599. The most popular format for growth-stage founders is a multi-month retainer, roughly £480-£900 for three months, or about £127-£200/month. That would get you regular strategy calls and ongoing message support. Premium executive coaching for scaling, funded founders runs £1,200-£3,500+/month.

What do I cost?

My own sessions come in well under even the low end of those bands – I price for the founder still watching every pound, not a full established business. If you’re wondering why I don’t charge more, the answer is I really enjoy getting to work with a small business or startup and watch it grow – I find it hugely rewarding! This is another thing my clients value about working with me – I bring real passion and creativity to the table.

What a pre-launch beauty or DTC brand needs to know

TikTok is your discovery engine; Instagram is where you build the aesthetic and the loyalty. The content split that works is roughly 80% value and education, 20% direct sales pitch. The four-week run-up that tends to work looks like this: weeks 1–2 educate on the product and tell your own origin story. Week 3 goes properly behind-the-scenes, into the lab, the factory, the packaging decisions. Week 4 builds urgency with countdowns and a waitlist. Launch day itself becomes a live, interactive event.

Aimee Smale built Odd Muse from £12,000 in savings by documenting the journey with total transparency, including a £55,000 failure. It built enough trust that her second product did over £1 million in a single quarter. That’s not a script an agency could have written for her.

Of course, this is just a rough example of what it might look like. Every business is different – and for many of my clients it won’t look that way.

Frequently Asked Questions — Social Media Coach for Startup Brand

Is this really different from just hiring a social media manager?

Yes – a social media manager posts and runs the account for you. Coaching teaches you to run it yourself, with me checking your work rather than doing it. Some founders start with coaching and move to management later, once they’ve scaled past what they can manage alone.

Do you work with founders who have zero social media experience?

Yes, and that’s and by and large who I work with. Sandy’s story above is a good example of someone starting from a low technical baseline.

How long before I don’t need sessions any more?

That’s the goal, not just something I say. Most founders I work with are running things confidently themselves within a few months. At that point we either stop, or move to occasional check-ins rather than a regular retainer.

Can you help me plan an actual product launch, or just general strategy?

Both – the four-week content structure above is something I can help founders build out specifically for their own launch, not just generic advice.

What if I already understand Social Media but need help generating ideas or coming up with a solid marketing plan?

I can help! I’m well versed with content plans and marketing, and clients often praise my creative ability.
